Mid-Market Rate vs What You Actually Get
The rate shown here is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and the same benchmark you see on financial news. Banks and money changers add a margin on top, commonly 0.5% to 4% depending on the channel and currency, plus fixed fees, and card networks add their own conversion markup. When comparing remittance or forex services, convert the total you pay into the rate you effectively received. A "zero fee" service with a 3% rate margin is costlier than a flat-fee service at the mid-market rate.
What Moves the Rupee
The USD-INR rate responds to the dollar's global strength, crude oil prices (India's largest import), foreign investment flows, interest-rate differentials between the RBI and the US Federal Reserve, and RBI intervention that smooths volatility. Most other INR pairs are effectively computed through the dollar, which is why the euro or pound rate against the rupee often moves even when nothing changed in Europe or Britain.
Practical Tips
- For travel, a mix of a zero-forex-markup card and modest cash usually beats airport counters, which carry the worst rates.
- For large remittances, compare the effective rate across your bank, a dedicated remittance service and UPI-linked options — differences of 1% to 2% are common and add up quickly on big amounts. Our guide to sending money to India walks through the channels step by step.
- Rates move continuously while global markets trade; if timing a large conversion, watch the trend for a few days rather than converting at the first quote.
